RELATED SERVICES PROFESSIONALS

Related Services means developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as are required to assist a student with a disability and includes Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology Services, Interpreting Services, Psychological Services, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Counseling Services, including Rehabilitation Counseling Services, Orientation and Mobility services, certain Medical services, Parent Counseling and Training, School Health Services, School Nurse Services, School Social Work, Assistive Technology Devices, and more.

Occupational Therapy

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Occupational therapists are licensed rehabilitation care professionals who work to restore or improve physical abilities, promote behavioral changes, adapt surroundings, and teach new skills; the goal is to have the individual achieve her or his best physical and/or mental functioning in daily life tasks. Occupational therapists provide these services on the referral or prescription of a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.

Occupational therapy practitioners help people adapt to a variety of challenges: developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, job-related injuries, neurological problems, orthopedic injuries, birth defects, stroke, psychosocial disorders, chemical dependency, age-related disorders

They help with impaired physical functioning which hampers the ability to perform daily life tasks, psychosocial problems which hamper the ability to function in daily life, special needs which require modification of the physical environment and/or use of specialized equipment and technologies (e.g., changes in the home or job site for a person in a wheelchair)

Speech Language Therapy

SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY A speech-language pathologist is a licensed health care professional who diagnoses, evaluates, and treats disorders of speech, voice, swallowing, and/or language. Speech-language pathologists treat communication problems in infants, children, adolescents and adults. You might consult a speech-language pathologist to help someone with a speech impairment, such as stuttering, slurred speech, or voice problems; someone whose speech or language has been affected by a stroke or head injury; someone whose speech has been affected by surgery; someone with a swallowing disorder.

You might use the services of a speech-language pathologist for a child if you have difficulty understanding what the child is trying to say; you think the child is speaking differently from children of the same age; the child has difficulty telling you what he or she wants; or the child has difficulty understanding what people are saying.

Physical Therapy

PHYSICAL THERAPY A physical therapist is a licensed health care professional who examines and evaluates a patient’s condition and then plans and administers treatments to promote optimal health. Physical therapists seek to relieve pain, improve the body’s movement and function, maintain cardiopulmonary function, restore, maintain and promote optimal physical function; and limit disabilities resulting from injury or disease.

Physical therapists take your health history, observe your posture and movement, evaluate your injury, and develop a plan of care. Treatment may include, but is not limited to, the following: patient/client education in health, wellness, and safety; manual therapy, such as massage and mobilization and manipulation; therapeutic exercise; management of pain; application of therapeutic modalities, such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation; training in daily living activities

Social Work & Counseling

SOCIAL WORK & COUNSELING Social work is a profession that helps individuals, families, and groups change behaviors, emotions, attitudes, relationships, and social conditions to restore and enhance their capacity to meet their personal and social needs.

Social workers are trained to provide a variety of services, ranging from psychotherapy to the administration of health and welfare programs. They work with human development and behavior, including the social, economic, and cultural systems in which people function.

Social workers deal with a wide variety of long and short-term mental, emotional, behavioral and environmental conditions, including:

  • Mental illnesses and emotional disturbances
  • Marital and family difficulties
  • Adjustment problems related to acute and chronic illnesses
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Behavioral and learning disorders of children and adolescents
  • Community problems and social issues

Psychology

PSYCHOLOGY A psychologist is a health care professional who diagnoses and treats mental, nervous, emotional, and behavioral disorders and ailments. Psychologists’ practices also include industrial/organizational psychology, research, and teaching.

In providing services to individuals, organizations, and the public, psychologists apply principles, methods or procedures of understanding, predicting or influencing behavior.
New York psychologists offer services in a variety of areas:

  • Evaluate, counsel and provide psychotherapy for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, nervous, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They provide these services for individuals and groups.
  • Administer and interpret tests of mental abilities and aptitudes, interests, neuropsychological status, personality, emotions, and motivation.
  • Evaluate and develop habilitation plans and treat individuals for addictions, cognitive impairments, and neuropsychological disorders.
  • Provide educational and vocational planning.
  • Perform personnel selection, organizational management and evaluation, and advertising and market research.

Augmentative/Alternative Communication & Assistive Technology Services

AUGMENTATIVE/ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION & ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Full range of Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) & Assistive Technology Services available including a full range of Evaluations and Consulting Services. Available for students not previously provided with AAC systems, and for those who already have an AAC system that may or may not meet current needs. All types of Technology Systems considered including Low Technology, Simple Technology, and High Technology.

Highly qualified Blue Sea Consultant is available to meet your needs in this complex area. Full range of in-district and in-home consulting services available to support these technologies.

AAC – Complete evaluation or re-evaluation for students in need of AAC systems. Includes records review, observation, team meeting, receptive & expressive language testing, AAC Systems trials, written report (NYS Medicaid format)& vendor relations.

Assistive Technology EvaluationEvaluation for a student for Instructional Supports. Includes records review, observation, team meeting, norm referenced and/or graded reading & writing assessment, trials with Instructional Technology Hardware & Software, vendor relations, & written report.

AAC/Assistive Technology ConsultationConsultation in support of the above includes training for the educational team and families, system customization, direct consultation to service providers & staff, collaboration with educational team in modifying the curriculum to meet the student’s academic and/or communicative needs, training & support generating individualized goals & objectives, training on the development of individualized, skill based collection methods, facilitating use of assistive technology supports & AAC systems previously purchased, SMARTboard training as a tool to develop reading, writing & communication skills.

Technology – Types of Available Systems (Low, Simple, & High Technology) Note – The iPad provides access to high technology capabilities at a price commensurate with simple technology solutions. There are currently over 700,000 apps available, many of which can be used as tools for the development of communication, reading and writing. Translation/Interpreting Services (All Languages)

TRANSLATION (ALL LANGUAGES) Translation services are available in all languages, including, but not limited to, Cantonese, Chinese, Creole, French, Greek, Italian, and Spanish.

Interpreters are available for CSE Meetings, Parent Meetings, Conferences & Workshops. Translation services are available for various written documents and reports and can be tailored to meet your individual needs.

Neurological & Neuropsychological Evaluation Services

Neurological Evaluation Diagnosis of all categories of neurological disease involving central, peripheral & autonomic nervous systems. Health history, mental status, functional of cranial nerves, strength, coordination, reflexes and sensation.

Neuropsychological Evaluation Neurological testing, cognitive/IQ, achievement, adaptive behavior assessment, assessment of emotional & social functioning. Evaluation of cognitive and behavioral functions also include, executive functions (planning, abstraction, conceptualization), attention, memory, language, perception, sensorimotor functions, motivation, mood state and emotion, quality of life, personality styles.

Psychiatric Evaluation

Psychiatric Evaluation Psychiatric Evaluation to diagnose any number of emotional, behavioral or developmental disorders. Includes description of behaviors present, symptoms noted, and effects of behaviors/symptoms as related to school performance, relationships and interactions with others.

A-B-C Smart

A-B-C SMART is a pre-referral educational enrichment program in key related services domains generally for students pre-k through Grade 3 that are Fun, Preventive & Therapeutic. Designed to strengthen student performance across key domains, A-B-C Smart programs are strategic, evidence-based, & cost-effective. Multi-week “curriculums” tailored to your school district’s needs allow for a comprehensive approach that addresses student needs in all educational settings.
